North Bergen Overview
North Bergen stretches from the Meadowlands-side transportation and commercial corridors in the west to the Palisades and Hudson River waterfront in the east. Its irregular shape reflects nearly two centuries of municipal changes that carved Hoboken, Guttenberg, Weehawken, Union City and Secaucus from territory that was once part of a much larger North Bergen Township.
Areas, Neighborhoods & Major Corridors
North Bergen does not have one single downtown. Its geography is better understood through a series of north-south corridors and distinct elevations, each with a different role.
The southern portion of North Bergen around Kennedy Boulevard and the teens/20s includes dense residential blocks, John F. Kennedy School, neighborhood businesses and the combined Downtown Recreation Center & Library at 1231 Kennedy Boulevard.
Kennedy Boulevard through the 40s, 50s and 60s contains Town Hall, schools, shopping, multifamily neighborhoods and access toward Tonnelle Avenue and the Meadowlands side of the township.

History: From a Huge Township to Modern North Bergen
North Bergen's municipal history explains its unusual shape. The township was once far larger than it is today, and many nearby North Hudson municipalities were created from its territory.
A Revolutionary War engagement took place on the Palisades near today's Boulevard East and 75th Street. North Bergen commemorates the site near Fredman/Riverview Park.
North Bergen was created from Bergen Township.

James J. Braddock North Hudson County Park
Braddock Park is not simply a neighborhood park—it is one of the largest and most important public spaces in Hudson County. Located around 79th Street and Bergenline Avenue, the park covers approximately 167 acres atop the Palisades.
The roughly 16-acre lake forms the visual center of the park and supports wildlife habitat as well as scenic walking routes.
The park's extensive path network gives residents room to walk, exercise and enjoy wooded areas in one of the nation's most densely developed counties.
Fields, tennis, basketball, volleyball, bocce, handball, football, little league and exercise facilities support a large range of sports.
